Halloween is a fun time for kids of all ages, and Halloween safety tips are crucial to ensure a joyful and secure experience. The goal, as always, is to score an abundant number of sugary treats and return home safely.
The Doar, Drill, and Skow team wants you to have a safe and fun holiday, so we’ve put together a list of HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS to help you avoid an accident and enjoy your spooky day:
- Halloween safety starts with the costume. Costumes should be flame-resistant and should fit properly. Avoid items such as oversized shoes, and excessively long capes, both of which are trip and fall hazards.
- Use makeup instead of masks. Masks make it hard for children to see what’s around them, including cars.
- Wear brightly colored outfits and use reflective tape so drivers can see your children.
- Use crosswalks and carry a flashlight or glow stick, even at dusk. Stay on sidewalks that are well-lit.
- Tell your children not to eat anything until they get home and you have had a chance to examine their goodie bag.
- Use alternatives to candles in your pumpkins, such as a flashlight or a battery-operated candle.
- Put out a teal-colored pumpkin or a poster of one in your window to let children with food allergies know that you’re handing out allergen-free treats.
- DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE. Wisconsin state law forbids driving “any motor vehicle while composing or sending an electronic text message or an electronic mail message.” Especially on Halloween night, with lots of children running around who can be difficult to see, it is important to stay alert and keep your eyes on the road.
